The temple boasts a rich history spanning approximately 400 years and was established by Shri 1008 Mahant Parashostam Das Ji. Notably, it is believed that the temple was founded prior to the establishment of the city of Kanpur. According to legend, Mahant Parashostam Das Ji experienced a divine revelation while returning from Chitrakoot. He encountered a rock near the current site of the temple that bore a remarkable resemblance to the divine form of Bajrang Bali, another name for Lord Hanuman. Consequently, he decided to construct a temple at that location, which is now referred to as the Panki Temple. Since then, the temple has transformed into a spiritual center for devotees of Lord Hanuman.
The architecture of Panki Hanuman Mandir showcases a harmonious combination of traditional and contemporary elements. The temple features elaborate carvings that illustrate various narratives from the Ramayana. Surrounding the temple complex are verdant gardens that offer a peaceful retreat from the city's frenetic pace. Within the sanctum sanctorum lies the impressive idol of Lord Hanuman, depicted in a standing position.
The idol of Lord Hanuman at Panki Hanuman Temple is famous for its remarkable ability to change its appearance throughout the day. It is believed to manifest as Bala Hanuman (the child form) in the morning, as a youthful Brahmachari (the youthful form) at noon, and as a mature Mahapurush (the enlightened adult) in the evening. Devotees are drawn to this sacred site, attracted by its mystical presence and the promise of divine assistance. Additionally, the magnificent celebrations of Buddha Mangal contribute an extra dimension of spiritual grandeur to this revered sanctuary.
Panki Hanuman Mandir, located in Kanpur, is a venue for numerous important Hindu festivals, with Hanuman Jayanti being the most prominent. This festival, which marks the birth of Lord Hanuman, is celebrated with great enthusiasm at the temple, where worshippers participate in special prayers, rituals, and decorations. Buddha Mangal, also known as Bada Mangal, is a unique festival celebrated with great fervor. It's observed on every Tuesday of the Hindu month of Jyeshtha, which typically falls in May/June. This festival is deeply rooted in the worship of Lord Hanuman. Furthermore, the temple frequently organizes bhandaras, upholding the tradition of providing food to the masses, a practice linked to Neem Karoli Baba.
Although there is no formal dress code at Panki Hanuman Mandir, it is advisable to dress modestly in order to show respect for the religious activities occurring there. Men may choose to wear dhotis or long trousers along with shirts while women may choose to wear a saree, half saree, or chudidhars. It is best to refrain from wearing Western clothing such as shorts, skirts, and sleeveless tops.
